Weapon Classes

In FFO, you'll come across many kinds of weapons, and you may ask yourself if something you've just found is better than what you currently have equipped. There is no way to check the stats of equipment in FFO, so the best way to check if a weapon is any good is to use it in battle, or check how much a merchant will purchase it for. Usually, the more a weapon costs, the better it is. Keep in mind that monster items are reduced in price 50 to 75%, so just because something is more expensive doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

Some weapons in FFO will increase certain stats. The amount the stat gets raised by is based on the weapon itself, and on it's quality. For example, a Masterwork Snake Staff will give a larger boost to your magic attack than a Fine Snake Staff will. However, a Fine Azure Staff will increase magic attack power more than a Masterwork Snake Staff would, so even mages should increase their weapon proficiencies from time to time.

On weapon proficiency, increasing the proficiency does allow for the weapon to perform better damage in battle but will not also increase durability like raising the armor proficiency does. In fact, the more damage a weapon deals will cause that much more damage to the weapon itself.

There are 8 categories of weaponry, each with their own sub-categories.



Blades: Blades are fairly well-rounded, with their power and speed greatly varying depending on the kind of blade equipped

Two-handed swords are some of the strongest weapons in the game, however they are expensive, lower agility, and are very slow.
(examples: buster sword, claymore)

Axes are slightly more damaging than normal swords, but they are slower, and lower dexterity by a small amount.
(example: hand axe, brutal axe)

One-handed swords are the weakest kind of blade weapon, but they are the fastest.
(examples: rapier, scimitar)


Blunt: Blunt weapons are similar to blade weapons, however they are generally slower and more damaging than blades are.

Hammers do high damage, but decrease dexterity.
(examples: wooden hammer, iron hammer)

Clubs are faster and weaker than hammers, however they increase dexterity, making it easier to hit your target.
(examples: wooden club, iron bludgeon)

Maces are the hardest hitting blunt weapon, however they are the most expensive.
(examples: spiked club, iron mace)


Knives: Knife weapons are fairly weak per hit, however, they are one of the fastest weapons in the game.

Standard knives do average damage, however they increase luck, making it easier to score critical hits.
(examples: small dagger, bandit knife)

Forked knives are stronger than standard knives, but they don't increase luck and are more expensive.
(examples: kyzawa, hyzou)


Melee: Melee weapons are hard hitting, and very fast weapons.

Nunchucks are slightly more damaging than other melee weapons, however they don't raise stats.
(examples: wooden nunchuck, iron nunchuck)

Tonfa weapons greatly increase agility, making it easier to dodge enemy attacks.
(examples: wooden tonfa, iron tonfa)

Claws increase dexterity, making it easier to hit your target.
(examples: pounce claw, scorpion pincer)


Polearms: Polearms are expensive, hard hitting two-handed weapons that have average speed, in addition, all polearms have a range of 2 tiles.

Standard polearms are weaker than lances, however they are faster, and have no effect on your agility.
(examples: stone spear, steel spear)

Lance weapons are stronger than standard polearms, but they slightly lower your agility.
(example: wooden lance)


Projectiles: Projectile weapons greatly differ, ranging from extremely slow and powerful, to weak and fast. All projectiles have a range of 7 tiles.

Projectiles, such as bows, raise your dexterity stat. They are also one of the fastest weapon types.
(examples: slingshot, short bow)


Staves: Staves are weak, inexpensive, and have low durability. However, they are are fairly fast, and can raise an important stat for certain mage classes.

Ordinary staves are only slightly more damaging than magical staves.
(examples: wooden staff, iron staff)

Magical staves increase magic attack power greatly, making damage spells hit harder.
(examples: snake staff, azure staff)


Whips: Whips are similar to polearms because of their range, however, they are much faster and weaker when compared to polearms. Unlike polearms, whips are one-handed weapons, and in addition, all whips have a range of 2 tiles.

Flails will do more damage than other types of whips.
(examples: chain whip, flail)

Other whips have various effects such as raising dex, luck or agility
(examples: thorn whip, leather whip)

Armor Types

Vital to the survival of any character, armor is what helps keep you alive when facing dangers of the FFO world. There are numerous types of armor, and all armor is divided one of four types: Heavy, Light, Stealth, or Mage.


Heavy Armor

Heavy armor, as the name implies, is heavy. Wearing this will have a large impact on your movement speed and agility. However, it is the cheapest to buy and maintain and can also be found fairly easily in shops. When looking at spending 5000 gold on heavy armor, or another type, the heavy armor will be the one which gives superior protection, however the 5000 gold heavy armor will require more skill to use as well. Heavy Armor also has a small chance of completely negating any physical attack.

heavy equipment sets: adamant, bronze, chain, copper, dragon, guardian, iron, leather, silver, steel, warlord, wooden


Light Armor

Light armor, as the name tells, will weigh less than Heavy Armor, which will cause less impact on stamina; it also does not affect agility like Heavy armor does, and in fact gives a boost to dexterity. A suit of Light armor with the same defensive strength of a piece of heavy armor will cost more, and may be slightly harder to find in shops as a result.

Stealth Armor

This armor type is made for those who look for having an edge in dexterity and agility. The armor tends to be very light, and coupled with the dexterity and agility bonus, it is very useful and expensive. Stealth armor tend to cost a good bit more than their heavy and light counterparts, but are still less than Mage Armor. Cloaks and Coats are a common type of Stealth Armor.

stealth equipment sets: assassin, bandit, black leather, heavy fur, highwayman, initiate, ninja, regal, rogue, royal, swindler, thief, traveler


Mage Armor

Mage Armor is for those who use magic, as well as those looking for defense against it. This armor tends to have special properties, which grant bonuses to magic attack and resistance. As a result, they are the most expensive type of armor to be found. Due to their high cost and rarity, it is unlikely to find the strongest Mage Armors for sale in many shops, if any.

mage equipment sets: apprentice, archwizard, crimson, conjuror, druidic, enchanter, novice, sage, shaman, sorcerer, warlock, wizard


It should be noted that raising your armor proficiency will both help to increase the durability of the armor you wear and increase what benefits it provides to you (mostly just defense, but some provide dexterity, agility and magical boosts to your character as well).

The kind of armor you will use will be up to you. All that is required to use the equipment is the proficiency to wear it. The choice of which type of armor you will use is for you to decide.

Equipment Suffixes

Periodically you may come across enchanted equipment with specific non-elemental effects. These effects are denoted by the respective suffixes affixed to the item's name. Each suffix grants the item properties unique to that particular suffix.

The names of equippable items enchanted in this manner are modified and usually take the form: [item name] of the [suffix]. Each item can only take one suffix.

Suffix categories are listed below. Each listing includes 1) constituent suffixes in increasing order of effect, 2) equipment types able to take the suffix, 3) a brief description.


Damage Return:

Suffix: Thorns, Spikes, Razors, Swords
Equipment: torso, wrist, head, and hand armor

A portion of all melee damage is returned to the attacker. Returned damage is not affected by defense and cannot be blocked. The effect is only produced when the item is targeted.


Dexterity Reduction:

Suffix: Blundering
Equipment: all weapons

The hit rate of players using weapons with this suffix is reduced.


Drain:

Suffix:
--- HP: Leech, Locust, Lamprey
--- MP: Bat, Wraith, Vampire
Equipment: all weapons

For HP draining suffixes, a portion of the weapon's damage is returned to the attacker as health during each attack. For MP draining suffixes, a percentage of the target's maximum MP is returned to the attacker.


Durability Increase:

Suffix: Ages
Equipment: all except footwear

The item's durability is increased to 500%.


Knockback:

Suffix: Bear
Equipment: all weapons but knives

The target is pushed one tile away from the attacker during a successfully completed attack. Multitile monsters are not affected.


Proficiency Reduction:

Suffix: Ease
Equipment: all except footwear

Proficiency requirements to use the affected item are lowered considerably.


Rapid Casting:

Suffix: Magus
Equipment: staves

The lag time between clicking and actually casting a spell is removed. In order to have this effect, the staff must be equipped as the primary weapon.


Rapid Striking:

Suffix: Swiftness
Equipment: all weapons

The lag time between clicking and actually attacking with a weapon is removed.


Recoil Reduction:

Suffix: Rabbit, Cheetah
Equipment: all weapons except knives

Using a weapon with recoil reduction reduces the cooldown time after an attack.


Regeneration:

Suffix:
--- HP: Sapling, Vine, Oak
--- MP: Spirit, Soul, Will o' Wisp
--- stamina: Wanderer, Wayfarer, Traveler
Equipment: all armor except shields and footwear.

The wearer slowly regains health, mana, or stamina over time. For stats that regenerate automatically, the rate is increased. HP and MP rates are not cumulative; only the item with the greatest effect in each category is active.


Speed Boost:

Suffix: Pacing, Haste, Speed, Acceleration
Equipment: foot armor

The wearer's speed is increased by a considerable amount.


Stat Boost:

Suffix:
--- HP: Jackal, Fox, Wolf, Tiger, Mammoth, Colossus
--- MP: Newt, Frog, Lizard, Snake, Serpent, Dragon
Equipment: tunics and pants

The wearers maximum HP or MP is increased by a percentage determined by the suffix. Effects are cumulative.


Weight Increase:

Suffix: Snail, Turtle
Equipment: all except footwear

Item weight increases. Armor provides greater defense, and weapons have greatly increased recoil times.


Weight Reduction:

Suffix: Feather, Wings
Equipment: all except footwear

Stamina drain and speed reduction caused by the item is reduced.




As I understand it, knives lack Cheetah and Footwear only gets speed boosts now.

Elemental Prefixes

So you've been playing the game for a while and you've come across a weapon or armor with an element tag on it. What does that mean?

This means, that a weapon will do damage based on the element on it. Which means, a Standard Silver Fire-Sword will do an added Fire damage to the target.

This means, however, that the weapon will be less effective on monsters/Player Characters that are resistant to that element. On the other hand, it will do more damage on monsters/Player Characters that are weak to that element.

The same effect is given on armor. While you may feel strong wearing that Fine Silver Flood-Armor, you will take more damage when you are hit with a Lightning-based attack (whether that be a lightning elemental weapon or spell). On the other hand, you'll have more defense against Water-based attacks.

This means that you will have added defense on an attack of that element, but you'll be hit harder when you get hurt by an elemental attack that beats that element (Lightning beats Water, etc).

The net effect is the formation of two elemental 'wheels'. Elements in each wheel are listed below, in order from stronger > weaker.


Standard Elemental Wheel:
Air > Earth > Lit > Water > Fire > Ice > Air

Non-Standard Elemental Wheel:
Cure > Poison > Light > Dark > Cure


So, read on to see the elements and levels. They are listed from weakest to strongest, left to right (Farthest left is Level 1, farthest right is Level 7).

Sand, Earth, Granite, Rock, Crystal, Stone, Quake

Air
Breeze, Gust, Wind, Aero, Storm, Tornado, Sky

Fire
Flame, Burn, Fire, Inferno, Blaze, Lava, Flare

Water
Aqua, Water, Wave, Tidal, Flood, Torrent, Tsunami

Ice
Cold, Snow, Frost, Ice, Freeze, Blizzard, Glacier

Lit
Shock, Zap, Volt, Lightning, Bolt, Thunder, Thor

Dark
Shadow, Dark, Shade, Unholy, Demon, Hell, Doom

Light
Bright, Light, Radiant, Gleaming, Flash, White, Holy

Poison
Poison, Taint, Bio, Venom, Blight, Plague, Bane

Cure
Alleviation, Soothe, Remedy, Pure, Heal, Cure, Life

Seeing as how those of us that have accurate information have been working hard at it for a long time now, it's not easy to want to give up hard-earned information just so everyone can look upon it as if it's some Wiki that tells you how to beat the game. The information isn't really that "special" until you get into the nitty gritty of it, but I have always had a firm opinion against those sort of guides because they take a lot of the work out of playing. Just sayin' brah.
