Dean and I were discussing the benefits of having buildings to scale on the "overworld" instead of having a separate inside-of-building map layer. Given the custom opacity system in Terulia, having roofs appear/disappear wouldn't be a problem.

Implementing this system would have some interesting implications. For one, town areas would have to increase about 3X in size. Second, the cookie-cutter domain buildings would need to be revamped. Along those lines...

Here's a possible change to domain construction that would accommodate this new system. Instead of placing buildings whole, what if buildings were built "brick by brick", that is, one stone per wall tile, allowing for custom building shapes/structures. Another implication of this system if implemented: being able to create buildings practically anywhere you want.

Discuss.

That (being able to build your domain buildings) would be an awesome idea. I think that it would really add to the investment people feel in the game. I mean come on, someone who builds their own house doesn't disown it. Usually. Burning it down for insurance money is a different thing entirely =)
On a side note, any idea how that would change the "lag" (I put that in quotations because on dial up I always have lag hahaha) in the game? To have to save every brick in a town would affect it to some extent, I can imagine.

Would towns being 3 times their normal size affect the total map size in the game at all? If you took a town area that was maybe 50x50 as a conservative size, and took it up to 150x150, that is a dramatic difference. The extra room will have to come from SOMEWHERE.

In the end I'm all for it, it's an awesome idea!

I'd give it 20 minutes from when someone gets the resources until an obscene-shaped house is built.

Yeah this sounds like a great idea to me.

There would be a minimal size for the buildings though, right? with 3x size of domains, they would have to have some sort of minimal size, otherwise people would just build like 3x3 buildings and have a huge city in places like Sankora.

a 3x3 building would only have one walkable inside space.

Ah.

Well, with this type of construction, would we be able to build multiple shops inside one building? It would be kinda cool to have shops like the one in Aldeae. I bet it would prolly cost a bit more tho, considering it would be multiple businesses under one roof.

Could we also have multiple floors on buildings?

Placing buildings brick-by-brick sounds like it could get extremely annoying unless the domain leader can get the option of building entire lines at a time.

Tripling domain size to accommodate for this also sounds like it'd make areas more of a burden to travel through for all players, while obviously only a select few (domain lords) get the creative benefit from it. Those penis buildings may sound funny to you guys on paper but I doubt it's going to be fun to have to walk around the damn thing if you want to go from one end of town to another. That stupid arena that Giant's Helm once had was big enough; imagine three times the walking distance to get around that.

TO be honest, I don't think id mind the extra walking. And still, I don't think domain construction would even really be that tedious. Its essentially the same way now with walls, and it isn't that bad.

I don't think it would be that tedious either, though domains being larger to accommodate this would make them more difficult to defend because of the distance you have to cross to get from one entrance to another, and you would have to build much larger walls to wall in the domain.

This is a really cool idea, it would just require a lot of little tweaks and changes.

Kind of a dumb idea, but what if we had some sort of short distance transport in towns? Like a train, horses, carriages.... teleporters? It could provide a good way to get around town faster and to move supplies like stone and wood around easier.
