resource downloading and lag

I believe its loading that persons characters and implementing it into the game causing the game to re-load resources so that the icon appears

And I have to say most of the lag is consistent, I played for 4 hours and it was just butchy and slow

Ok, so i just tried logging on and it litterally took a half an hour just for the resources to download as I logged in. Yet I cant even play the game because the resources are just downloading constantly now.

Last night it was lagging regardless of people logging in or out. Random downloads from like 50k, 75k, 150, and 500k. Has it gotten worse from that?

ok currently there is a package of 380k or so loading every 2 min or so making the game unplayable so gaku i would like to at least hear your alternative. but ya at this rate id prefer the old way back over now you cant ewven play in this lag before you just died occasionally from lag.

I'm not certain if this will work, but here's the theory...

1) compile the dynamically-generated icon files after the game has loaded
2) use shell commands to transfer the new .rsc to the web server
3) new logins download the current icon set from the web server

I'm not sure how well this will work but it's worth a shot. Previously, the rsc was downloaded from byond.com (where it was hosted), but the rsc is so big that it very quickly hits the bandwidth limit. Hosting it at www.terulia.com will get around that issue although the download will be slower.

So basically, going back to the old way of doing things with the possible added bonus of having the dynamic icons in the downloadable rsc. and again, just a theory.

well as it stands im all for it currently ffo is unplayable. your idea seems nice it seems like it would fix the current issue, put the game back to at least playable, and add possible less rsc loading/faster loading.

Well, if it doesn't work, atleast it was a shot, I would suggest undoing the last "fix" before implementing this, take a day or so to test it then if it works cool, if not, try re-implementing the other fix and see if both together work, may be a decent amount of work but it would test all current possibilities

If none work I suggest a revert back to how it was before, that's just me tho

I'd just like to add that, if you disconnect in battle and have to restart dreamseeker... you're dead downloading 1 million + resources.

How about resource dl rate?

And armies didn't really add much lag?

Sound like real problems are loggingin/out

if you can target that gaku I'm sure a huge bulk of lag and resource could be dealt with

Part of the problem is the reason Byond has network delay in the first place, isn't it? People that have slow connections slow down the game for everyone.

That may be a possibility however, lag is often not affecting everyone, while one person with crap net may be lagging others with better net may not, so it isn't exactly the game lagging all the time, its occasionally the net, however the game itself lags a lot, so between the time spent with net lag and game lag there is very little un-laggy gameplay

Well, see it as you may I wasn't whining, i'l still play idgaf

The post was meant to establish that lag sometimes isn't the game itself lagging and lag experienced may be for one specific user at the time

And that the game lags as well, it was meant to really point out that not everyone lags at the same time due to connection or net quality while sometimes everyone does due to game lag

only took me ~2 minutes to download all the resources when i just logged in. they were somewhere in the range of 5.5mb
